different fromとdifferent thanをめぐって

英文法を一通り知っておきたいと思い、"Practical English Usage"（ASIN:0194420981）の通読を試みている。途中、気になる記述を見つけた。differentのあとにくるprepositions（前置詞）を解説している箇所（本書page 137）。

From is generally used after different; many British people also use to. In American English, than is common.
American football is very different from/to soccer.
(AmE ... different from/than soccer.)
Before a clause, different than is also possible in British English.
The job's different than I expected.
(OR ... different from/to what I expected.)

この項を読んで、「あれ？」と思う。それは、「404 Blog Not Found:やっちゃうとバカにみえちゃう英文法の間違い10選」にて、different thanは「やっちゃうとバカにみえちゃう英文法の間違い」とされていたからだ。

7. Different than for different from
thanは「差がある」を意味するので勘違いしやすいのですが、AとB「が」違うのはA「から」Bが違うだけなのです。

"Practical English Usage"とは、真っ向から対立する見解に見える。一方では、differnt thanは、アメリカ英語ではcommonであるとされ、また、後に節を取る場合にはイギリス英語においても使われ得るとされているのに、他方では馬鹿に見えるとすらいわれている。どういうことか。

ちょっと検索してみたところ、どうもアメリカ英語とイギリス英語を使う人々たちの間で、お互いの言葉の使い方についての認識に、混乱が生じているようにも見える。

"Different than" is a very popular expression: "My car is different than yours." As far as I can tell, "different from" is relatively rare: "My car is different from yours." The trouble is that "different than" makes little sense; it is sloppy language. We should be saying "different from."
The British seem to consider "different than" an Americanism, just one of the many grating ways that we Americans abuse the language.

こうして見ると、different fromとdifferent thanのどちらが正しいのかという問題には、アメリカとイギリスとの文化的な相違についての、お互いによる偏見めいた認識や、「やっちゃうとバカにみえちゃう」口語表現に対する、英語版「正しく美しい言葉遣い」のような保守的な抵抗があるのだろうかという想像もできる。しかし、いずれにせよ、different fromを使うのが多くの場面で適切であるという結論を得た。
